The project has developed an innovative fish hook which, based on extensive research and testing, can be recommended to the industry as an example of good practice in reducing catches and better survival of caught unwanted organisms. The recommendations will refer to longline hooks (size, shape and orientation of the protrusion), so that they will not represent significant additional costs for the fishing industry, and the equipment will be significantly improved from the point of view of selectivity and reduction of unwanted catches. In this way, the impact of the project on the fishing sector will be significant and without delay. Just a few percent increase in the survival rate of unwanted longline catch will have a positive effect on the state of fish resources.
Simple design, implementation does not require large investments as well as employee training.
It can be easily integrated into existing fish catching systems.
No training is required.
The solution is in accordance with relevant environmental regulations and industry standards in the EU. There are no certificates or accreditations.
Fisherman Franjo Kovačević from Šibenik has tested innovative solution during the project implementation. He worked closely with members of the project team, where he tested an innovative longline for a year, which showed results in the form of preventing the catch of small - immature fish.
The solution itself turned out to be very effective, however, possible necessary improvements were seen in the fishing itself in terms of bait (the project used squid, which did not have good results).
