Solution overview

Our technical solution represents an important step forward in monitoring key parameters for barrel wine production. These parameters are the temperature inside the barrel, whether the wine level drops below the set minimum, the opening time and the interval at which the barrel was opened, as well as the temperature and humidity of the cellar. This comprehensive data collection is realized through a Bluetooth connection from the IoT plugs to a central access point, which then transmits the data to the server and database via a Wi-Fi connection. Detailed insight into the collected data is available through the user interface that we implemented as a Web application. This technological approach reduces the need for manual visits to the basement and the reading of given values, which automatically means fewer workers needed for these routine operations. Such a system increases the precision of measurements and empowers wine producers to make timely decisions based on information from the cellar, achieve greater operational efficiency and improve wine quality control.

Key features

There are almost no solutions like ours on the market (we have been working on it for the last two years and have not come across anything similar). There are devices that are mounted on stainless steel barrels, but not on wooden barrels. With their help, the process of collecting relevant information from barrels in wine cellars was significantly facilitated.

Integration and adaptability in manufacturing environments

One of the main goals when creating this solution was its simple integration. Two levels of integration are possible. The first, simpler one, is for the winery to buy/rent our corks, install the mobile application through the Google play application and just touch the cork with the phone, which will be connected to the appropriate service through the application. After that, all readings are done via the mobile app and the NFC sensor. In this case, it is not necessary to have Wi-Fi in the basement, but the data of all previous readings is obtained when someone with a phone walks through the basement. Another approach is to install an additional central device that connects to Wi-Fi, which allows real-time readings.

Implementation support and training for manufacturers

We offer support in the implementation of the solution itself. The solution is simple, almost plug-and-play, but as a company we will provide user instructions, installation instructions, as well as channels for direct communication with clients.

Sustainability, compliance and certifications in the EU

All materials used are certified for contact with food (wine).

Use cases

Example of successful implementation of solution in manufacturing company.

Our solution developed through the EU BetterFactory project. During the project, we successfully tested it in Italy at the Marco Felluga and Russiz Superiore wineries. We also conduct tests at the Erdevik winery in Serbia. The solution has shown great applicability in test environments and we are currently working on the final version of the solution, which should be completed by the end of the year.

ROI & Costs

Expected return on investment (ROI)

We made an estimate for ROI based on the time saved on visiting the cellar, recording the temperature, as well as checking whether the barrels are full, that is, whether it is necessary to pour wine into them so that oxidation does not occur. The calculation is that, on average, the winery spends at least 2 hours a week on these tasks. In addition, at least 7 hours per week are spent on tasks related to monitoring work orders, maintaining documentation and inventory control. If we express this in time on an annual basis, and if we consider that the average gross price of workers in wine cellars in Europe is around 10e per hour, we get that the annual savings is (2+7)*52*10e=4680euro. In addition to this, the winery achieves a lot of additional benefits in the form of accuracy of information, insight into the current state of the cellars from remote locations, as well as the quality of the final wine.

Cost overview: implementation and ongoing expenses

Our business model consists of plug rent and a SaS (Software as a Service) web application that monitors readings, but also enables monitoring of warehouses, lots, defining work orders, as well as easy use thanks to the application of the LLM model. The rent for one cork is 10e per month. If we assume that the winery will take 10 corks on average (because there is no need for a cork to go to each barrel, but one cork to each Lot in the cellar), then we arrive at a monthly amount of 1,200.00 euros. The price of monthly use of the software is 200 euros, which means that the annual cost of the winery is 3,600.00 euros.
